Heathers is a satirical take on the cultural norms of high school, following the protagonist Veronica Sawyer through a glittery, dark, and murderous senior year as she tackles color-coordinated mean girls, hypermasculine jocks and an unhinged boy (or in this case girl...) with painted nails. Veronica, the misfit protagonist of Heathers, struggles with fitting in with this hostile environment. Those feelings of alienation and non-conformance ring true for the many marginalized students who exist on Stanford’s campus, especially gender-marginalized people of color. In this, we hope that our performance — much like the original Heathers— is a satirical take of our own campus culture and promotes necessary conversations around identity and belonging.
What makes our production of Heathers even more unique is that we are piloting the first gender-bent antihero Janie Dean and the first queer female relationship between Janie “J.D.” Dean and Veronica Sawyer. The playwrights of the original Heathers have gifted us a newly rewritten script, enabling us to transform the original Jason “J.D.” Dean into Janie Dean in our show. We are excited for you join us on this journey and witness this new relationship dynamic in Heathers. Our production is supported by Queer Student Resources, Sexual Harassment/Assault Response & Education Office, and Cardinal Nights.
Content warning: This show contains scenes involving violent language, sexual activity, gun violence, murder, child abuse, alcohol, rape, bulimia, vomit, suicide, fat shaming, and homophobia.
We are dedicated to making this show as accessible as possible in this virtual format. Each show will include closed captioning. If you require any other disability-related accommodations or have any inquiries, please contact accessibility intern Nona Hungate at nhungate [at] stanford.edu.
We hope you enjoy the show! Please contact producer, Sierra Porter, at seporter [at] stanford.edu with any questions or concerns.
Book, Music, and Lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy.
Based on the film written by Daniel Waters. Heathers: The Musical was originally directed Off-Broadway by Andy Fickman and choreographed by Marguerite Derricks. HEATHERS THE MUSICAL is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. http://www.concordtheatricals.com
