"The problem is not police training, police diversity, or police methods. The problem is the dramatic and unprecedented expansion and intensity of policing in the last forty years, a fundamental shift in the role of police in society. The problem is policing itself." - Alex Vitale ("The End of Policing" published 2017 by Verso)

A sociological inquiry into the police
Although Alex Vitale does not advocate the full abolition of the police -- he only ever explicitly supports reforms, and only hints at the possibility -- this book provides much ammo for would-be police abolitionists.
A sociological study of the police and the carceral state, it goes through many recent cases of unarmed black Americans and others being murdered by cops with impunity. But it also frames these instances within the larger structures of class rule and social control the police are merely an armed apparatus of.
