ILWU Local 10 & 34 were successful on 3/15/20 in stopping the transfer of Covid-19 contaminated waste from the Grand
Princess to the docks and through Oakland and the East Bay. They held a press conference on the pier where
the ship was docked. Trent Willis, president of ILWU Local 10 stated that the companies had promised that the
waste would be put on barge next to the ship rather than be brought on the docks which might contaminate the
port, Oakland and the East Bay community.
Additionally longshore were angry that they. have not had proper health and safety protection while at work.
Steve Zeltzer of United Public Workers For Action reported that Cal-OSHA has been missing in action and
there was only one doctor and one nurse for the 19 million workers of California.
While the press conference was taking place, the companies told the truck drivers that they would not be
carrying the contaminated waste off the docks.
Also, Terry Valen who is president of the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) also discussed
the conditions of the crew and reported that communication with them had been inhibited by the government.

Bay Area ILWU Local 10, 34 and IBU leaders spoke out on the health and safety issues facing maritime workers and the need for the protection of the crew of the contaminated Grand Princess which has docked in the Port of Oakland.
ILWU members said the the employers PMA have refused to provide proper safety protection to defend their members on the docks against the Covid-19 virus.
They also said that they supported the right of the Grand Princess crew to be evacuated and repatriated to their countries. The ship crew have been contaminated and there is only one doctor on the ship. They have also prevented the unions or support organizations to contact them.

ILWU and IBU unionists joined with migrant community activists to call for the repatriation of the Grand Princess crew as well as proper healthcare for port and all US workers. Speakers also reported the Cal-OSHA has only 1 doctor and 1 nurse for 19 million workers and they have not been able to. go on the ship to see what the safety conditions are. There are less that 200 OSHA inspectors for California workers.
