SMART 1741 Bus Drivers’ Union
Location Details:
SFUSD School Board Meeting, 555 Franklin St. SF CA
SFUSD is considering contract choices that will undermine student safety. Bus Drivers, labor unions and community supporters will be holding a press conference and rally to ask SFUSD to put our students’ safety first.
The most recent proposal from SFUSD splits transportation work into three scopes of work that can be bid on separately. One scope of work is a new category of 10 non-buses with uncertified drivers, while leaving itself an open door to expand this work without limit.
School bus drivers are held to the highest standards of any commercial license in the state of California. They undergo hours of training, background checks, medical exams and drug screening, and California Highway Patrol certification before they start. All these tests must be regularly repeated to continue driving.
School buses are the most regulated vehicles on the road and are designed to protect the children inside. Steel reinforced sides, rollover protections, anchored seats and the red-light system all prioritize safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, students are 70 times more likely to get to school safely when riding in a school bus than in a car.
Using uncertified drivers in vans compromises the safety of the students we transport. We want the safest vehicles and the highest trained drivers for our students. Join us at the rally, press conference and SFUSD school board meeting to demand the best for our kids.
Rally at 5:00pm, press conference at 5:30pm.
