Why? Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) management is failing to cooperate coming to a fair, student-centered agreement that will provide the resources our students need to succeed and to attract and retain the best educators for our students. We had to file an Unfair Labor Practice Charge to get information in order to settle our contract. Management’s ZERO – 2% proposals are unacceptable and their disregard for our profession, our students, and our schools must stop. Our teaching conditions are the students’ learning conditions. Mt. Diablo teachers deserve a fair contract now!

What are the issues?

Class Sizes: Students need smaller class sizes. We are proposing lower class sizes, because current class sizes are TOO LARGE, and this creates unacceptable learning environments and goes against the district’s own plan for personalized instruction.

Student Supports and Resources: All our students deserve the resources and opportunities they need to succeed, and teachers know best what they need; including nurses, counselors and librarians. The least district management can do is to work with us. Why do we have to fight to get the learning conditions that will help our students succeed?

Retain our Highly Qualified Teachers: Management is not even offering a salary proposal that will keep up with the high Bay Area cost-of-living. Teachers are a student’s most important resource and our district must invest in its educators. Our goal is a reasonable contract that preserves the financial health of our district. We are here to negotiate and to work together for a better MDUSD.

What can you do?

Attend the “Fair Contract Now Rally” on Oct. 28 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the MDUSD office.

Tell MDUSD school board members to direct management to do their job, to provide the information requested by MDEA, and to settle a fair contract now.

The Community Town Hall Meetings have been rescheduled because we have not received the information we need from the District to properly analyze the financial situation. We have filed an Unfair Practice Charge with the Public Employee Relations Board based on their failure to meet the deadlines for providing this information. Please see the press release here for more information.
Mt. Diablo Teachers File Unfair Labor Practice Charge
Union Wants District Management to Bargain in Good Faith and Agree to a Fair, Student-Centered Contract

The Mt. Diablo Education Association (MDEA) today filed legal charges contending the Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) is refusing to provide financial information that can help settle a contract that provides a living wage and student resources.

MDEA educators first asked, and now demand, MDUSD provide information that can help settle a contract and to bargain in good faith.

“All of our students deserve the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. And teachers know best what they need. The least this district management can do is to work with us,” said MDEA President Anita Johnson.

The unfair labor practice charge, which was filed with the California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB), is happening during contentious contract negotiations in which Mt. Diablo teachers insist hefty class sizes and teacher turnover are hurting students. Educators say MDUSD has the ability to do more and, thus far, refuses to. “We want a fair contract for teachers. We’ve bargained in good faith and tried to be as flexible as possible to reach an agreement, while the district continues to withhold viable options for settlement,” Johnson said.

“Teachers are telling us loud and clear – do what’s right, fight to attract and retain quality teachers for our students, and insist public monies intended for the classroom are spent in the classroom,” she added. “Our students deserve better. Our educators deserve better.”
