General artificial intelligence has been the subject of science fiction stories for decades. Some portrayals such as "The Matrix" and "The Terminator" are bleaker than others. Is it possible that general artificial intelligence will be the salvation of humanity rather than its demise? This presentation will contrast general artificial intelligence with recent advances in special applications of artificial intelligence. It will consider the role of advanced telecommunications technologies in the development of general artificial intelligence.

Bob Burchfield is a member of the UUSF congregation, active in the Humanist and Non-Theist group.
