Oakland OEA Teachers, Students and Parents Protest Closure Of Roots International Academy

Hundreds of teachers, students and parents protest threatened closure of the Roots International Academy Middle School in Oakland at the Oakland Board Of Education on January 23, 2019. They also protested attack on librarians and the role of charters in destroying community public schools. Also some teachers talked about the role of the UTLA strike

Hundreds of Oakland students, teachers and parents rallied on Wednesday January 23, 2019 to oppose the proposed closure of Roots International Academy which is a middle school in the Oakland Unifed School District. School librarians and students also protested threats that will limit access to libraries by funding changes the management an school board are pushing. The Oakland Education Association is also having a strike vote in early February and face a likely strike. Teachers, students and parents talk about the effect of school closures. They also discuss the role of charters in closing public schools while opening up charters to replace them.

They also discuss the effect of the Los Angeles UTLA strike and the issues that brought them out on strike.
