San Mateo: Women's Rally in Solidarity with Women's March
It was not a march but a rally on a sunny day in downtown San Mateo. Many of the participants were women were "of a certain age." One carried a sign that read "Grannies Still Here Fighting to Protect Reproductive Rights Our Generation Won."
Between San Francisco and San Jose where large marches took place, a smaller rally reverberated with a singalong featuring tunes on the topics of women's rights, immigration rights, and the dream of a society free of corporate dominance.
Harini Krishnan of Indivisible SF Peninsula CA-14 led the long version of We Shall Overcome recalling the songs of the civil rights era. On the same theme, the Raging Grannies welcomed the crowd to shout out verses to the traditional tune "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around." Some of the audience contributions included mercenary wars, charter schools, nuclear armament, agribusiness, PG&E and patriarchy. As in, "Ain't gonna let the patriarchy turn me around!"
About 100 people attended the rally, co-sponsored by San Mateo Peace Action (SMPA) and the Raging Grannies Action League. SMPA holds a weekly protest in the same location as the day's event at 3rd and El Camino Real in San Mateo. Barring inclement weather, there is a rally with a weekly theme from 3 to 4pm every Saturday.
