Several thousand people marched and rallied in Oakland to defend public education and call for increased funding in solidarity with striking Los Angeles teachers. Not only educators, but students, staff and supporters came out for a day of speeches and performances.
The MLK Jr. Freedom Center, an organization that brings best practices from the Civil Rights Movement to community education to build strong community partnerships, had representatives in attendance as well.
The Oakland Education Association contract has expired and teachers are discussing striking in February. Hundreds of printed signs read, "Ready to Strike for the Schools that Students Deserve."
