Guantanamo 17th Anniversary; Prosecute John Yoo!
Rally & press conference
Please join us in front of UC Berkeley Law School (Boalt Hall) on Bancroft Way @ College Ave., Berkeley, 12:30-1:30 PM, this Friday, January 11.
We are gathering to mark another tragic year since the opening in 2002 of the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo, where forty prisoners remain, including 5 who have been cleared for release. CODEPINK will host a rally and press conference at UC Berkeley Law School to mark the 17th Anniversary of Guantanamo Prison and to call for the prosecution of John Yoo for aiding and abetting torture and other war crimes.
A letter will be delivered to UC Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, who once called for Yoo’s prosecution (in “Nation” magazine) with information about widespread community and human rights group opposition to Yoo's position at UC Law School. The Berkeley City Council, Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission, and UC law students and faculty have all called for investigation of Yoo's role in torture. We will ask the Dean to take steps to censure and/or terminate Professor Yoo, who is teaching 3 classes this semester, including one on Constitutional Law.
If you are available to speak on behalf of your commission, council, human rights or peace and justice group, or if you wish to provide appropriate music, please contact me now at codepinkgg [at] gmail.com to be added to the speaker list. We will video the rally. Thank you.
