WORLDWIDE

Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro's inauguration is on January 1, 2019. We call on activists to organize a die-ins and sign up people for Veganuary (going vegan for the month of January) outside a Brazilian Embassy or consulate.

Protest his plans to industrialize the Amazon and open it to more agribusiness and mining. The environmental and indigenous rights group Amazon Watch has described Bolsonaro’s plan as reckless, saying it will "bring untold destruction to the planet’s largest rainforest and the communities who call it home, and spell disaster for the global climate."

--> Call to action: Save the rainforests, Help Brazilian activists, Go vegan!

Demonstrate at the Brazilian embassy in your country, hand a letter and try to speak their officials about the issue. Here is a list of embassies and consulates worldwide: https://www.embassy-worldwide.com/country/brazil/

Sign the petition: https://bit.ly/2EyRKnA

Register for Veganuary: https://veganuary.com/register/?a=save
You can download Veganuary/Save leaflets here: https://1drv.ms/b/s!AolTe95Z1wd9v2ujLU91iA5yFH9u

Organize a cyber event on a platform popular in your country. Use the hashtags: #AmazonEmergency #ClimateAlarm #AmazonRainforest #ClimateSaveMovement

Ask your government what they are doing to protect the Amazon Rainforest. (see sample letter/speaking points below)

Demand that companies in your country doing business with Brazil to use economic and political pressure (take a position, put diplomatic pressure, and implement sanctions and boycotts of products).

Demand that Brazil ban the construction of roads and highways, animal agriculture and mining in the Amazon. (see sample letter/speaking points below)

Ask the World Bank to stop supporting the destruction of the Amazon (see sample letter/speaking points below)

Speaking points

Bolsonaro’s platform indicates that he wants to eliminate Brazil’s Ministry of Environment and privatise and sell off the Brazilian rainforest, which is pivotal in cooling the earth and is the most diverse and tropical rainforest on the planet. Bolsonaro plans to build a highway through the rainforest, pushing the rainforest toward a critical tipping point, largely arising from excessive fragmentation arising from agriculture, including animal feed crop. Such fragmentation can lead to general drying and an increased propensity for fires and other causes of loss. Bolsonaro remains intent on opening up the Amazon to the farmers, miners and construction companies that supported his campaign. If these plans go forward, human and non-human inhabitants face severe and dire consequences to their very existence.

We ask President Bolsonaro to:
abandon his plans to privatise the Amazon and legislate and implement and enforce a ban on highways, land clearing, animal agriculture and mining in the Amazon
allow swathes of previously cleared land to regenerate in the Amazon to replenish the land to its natural state and reverse the damage done by animal agriculture
offer protection and support to the indigenous peoples that reside there and support and protect animal rights, environmental and indigenous peoples’ democratic right to protest.
We also ask that you help stop these atrocities now by voting with your purchases and offering support for plant based, vegan diets.
