The $1 Billion Dollar Eco Fraud Hunters Point/Treasure Island Cover-up And Cancer Dangers Not An Issue In The California Gubernatorial Debate?

Not An Issue In The California Gubernatorial Debate?

Press Conference

October 8 (Monday), 2018 9:00 AM

At: KQED
1601 Mariposa St, San Francisco

The only debate in the California gubernatorial debate election campaign will take place on October 8, 2018 at KQED in San Francisco. One issue that has yet to come up is the growing massive fraud scandal at the Hunters Point and Treasure Island nuclear radioactive dumpsites where developers want to build thousands of new condos.

The US government has spent over $1 billion to supposedly test, and cleanup this highly contami- nated radioactive dump site used by the US navy for decades. The EPA and Navy now say that there has been massive fraud in the testing by Tetra Tech. An- other company, Test America also falsified tests at Hunters Point/Treasure, and OHSA Federal lawyer Darrell Whitman was retaliated against for investigating this falsification.

This press conference will look at who were involved in this corruption scandal and how these government representatives have continued to say that Hunters Point and Treasure Island are safe, despite the discovery of more radioactive material. These same politicians have also been personally aware of whistleblowers who were being illegally retaliated against for exposing the falsification of the testing, yet they have been silent. Why?

The State of California and the City of San Francis- co have also continue to claim that the site can be made safe for more housing despite the continued discovery of more radioactive material at many of the parcels at Hunters Point. San Francisco City and County workers from the Department of Public Health continue to be paid for by Lennar, the developer of this project, and they are telling the residents today that they are not becoming sick from the toxins and radiation at these sites but are sick because of “stress”.

This is also a statewide issue since the cesium 137 contaminated asphalt and soil from Hunters Point was trucked to the unauthorized landfill in Contra Costa County. Speakers will discuss as well the need for a complete study of the residents, former and present of Hunters Point and Treasure Island who have been contaminated.

The continuing cancers and illnesses taking place in Hunters Point Shipyard/Bayview and Treasure Island are not being addressed. Where are the can- didates on these life and death issues? Thousands of African American and poor and working class people have been housed in these sites with serious cost to them and their families. It is also affecting the workers who work in at the shipyard including many City workers and yet this is not an issue in the gubernatorial debate?

This press conference will hear testimony about why this has to be an issue in the gubernatorial election, who is responsible for this cover-up and corruption scandal and what the cost have been for the residents of Hunters Point/Bayview and Treasure Island.

Speakers:

Dr. Larry Rose, former Cal-OSHA Medical Director;
Dr. Ahimsa Porter Sumchai
Residents of Hunters Point/Bay View and Treasure Island,
Tandra Lowe Hunters Point Environmental Researcher
Tony Kelly
Carol Harvey, Journalist and Videographer
Andre Patterson, former resident Treasure Island
