Victory! Cancellation of Contract with ICE at Richmond's West County Jail
On July 10, Contra Costa Sheriff David Livingston announced that his department is canceling its contract with ICE at the West County Jail in Richmond. Sherrif Livingston said that protests and public pressure played a role in the decision to cancel the contract.
In the midst of national outcry against ICE, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office announced that its multimilllion-dollar federal contract to detain undocumented immigrants in Richmond jail is being cancelled.
Protesters have demonstrated at the jail site more than once a week in recent months, demanding an end to the detention of immigrants at the jail. Immigrant advocacy groups joined those actions and worked behind the scenes for this outcome. Sherrif Livingston said that protests and public pressure played a role in the decision to cancel the contract with ICE.
According to the East Bay Times, when the Richmond facility is no longer used to house undocumented immigrants, the closest detention facility will be the Yuba County Jail in Marysville.
