This new film by Anne Lewis and associate producer Laura Varela, A Strike and an Uprising, illuminates two major moments in Texas labor history: the Pecan Shellers Strike of 1938 led by young communist Emma Tenayuca, and the Jobs With Justice campaign that coalesced around anti-Black racism at Stephen F. Austin University of 1985. Through the lens of participant interviews and the changes to their lives, this film ties together past history with today’s struggles, including the removal of the Jefferson Davis statue at UT-Austin. Anne Lewis will present her film.
