California Legislators that are beholden to the landlord lobby vote to allow no-cause evictions

By Lynda Carson - June 2, 2018

Oakland - On Thursday May 31, 2018, corrupt California Legislators beholden to the big moneyed interests of the real estate lobby and landlord lobby, double-crossed tenants throughout the state by defeating AB 2925 ( D. Rob Bonta-Oakland ), a bill that would require landlords to have a reason to evict a tenant from their housing.

If passed, the bill would prohibit a landlord from terminating a tenancy without a just cause reason such as nonpayment of rent, or breach of contract. As is in many cities throughout California, landlords may evict for any reason at all, or no reason at all, except for the wrong reason such as retaliation. Just cause eviction protection laws help to stabilize our communities and slow down the eviction-for-profit system. A system that mercilessly results in the tragic ever growing homeless population of families losing their housing because of all the no-cause evictions taking place throughout the state by greedy realtors, and landlords.

Those in favor of AB 2925, just cause eviction protections, include Assemblymembers Bloom, Bonta, Chau, Chiu, Chu, Friedman, Gipson, Gonzalez Fletcher, Holden, Jones-Sawyer, Kalra, Mullin, Mark Stone, Thurmond, Ting, Rendon.

Those in opposition to AB 2925 that are beholden to the big monied interests of the real estate lobby and landlord lobby include Assemblymembers Acosta, Aguiar-Curry, Travis Allen, Arambula, Baker, Berman, Bigelow, Brough, Burke, Caballero, Calderon, Carrillo, Cervantes, Chávez, Chen, Choi, Cooley, Cooper, Cunningham, Dahle, Daly, Eggman, Flora, Fong, Frazier, Gallagher, Gloria, Cristina Garcia, Eduardo Garcia, Gray, Grayson, Harper, Irwin, Kamlager-Dove, Kiley, Lackey, Levine, Limon, Low, Maienschein, Muratsuchi, Mathis, Mayes, McCarty, Medina, Melendez, Nazarian, Obernolte, O'Donnell, Patterson, Quirk, Quirk-Silva, , Reyes, Rodriguez, Rubio, Salas, Santiago, Salas, Steinorth, Voepel, Waldron, Weber, Wood.

None other than the notorious California Apartment Association (CAA) had the nerve to brag on their website about their corrupting influence over legislators, to ensure that the eviction-for-profit system continues to be a big money maker for the greedy evictors.

A list of corrupting campaign contributions to California politicians beholden to the California Apartment Association (CAA) include campaign contributions to Xavier Becerra for Attorney General, Cristina Garcia for Assembly, Catharine Baker for Assembly, Jim Cooper for Assembly, Jim Wood for Assembly, Raul Bocanegra for Assembly, Glazer for Senate, Evan Low for Assembly, Kamlager for Assembly, Robert Rivas for Assembly, Delgado for Senate, Gray for Assembly, Jesse Gabriel for Assembly, Luz Rivas for Assembly, Tom Daly for Assembly, Jim Frazier for Assembly, O’Donnell for Assembly, Miguel Santiago for Assembly, Nate Miley for Supervisor, Rudy Salas for Assembly, Tod Gloria for Assembly, Jose Medina for Assembly, Hueso for Senate, Robert Hertzberg for Senate, and many others that are beholden to the California Apartment Association.

Oakland has the fastest pace for gentrification and displacement in the Bay Area due to evictions:

In Oakland which has weak rent control laws, and has the fastest pace for gentrification and displacement in the Bay Area, according to records from the City of Oakland from 1/1/2016 through 12/31/2016, it received 8,551 eviction termination notices. According to additional records from the Housing and Community Development Department in Oakland, there were around 12,050 eviction termination notices served in Oakland from 1/1/2015 through 2/29/2016. Out of 784,923 renter households in the San Francisco, Oakland, Hayward area, reportedly in 2017 there were 12,362 evictions. This is a very inaccurate conservative number due to a lack of accurate eviction data.

Based on a new report released by Tenant’s Together and the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, evictions in California are triple previous estimates, with around 16,401 or more evictions occurring locally in Alameda County in 2014 through 2016.

Meanwhile, big money also opposes the repeal of the Costa-Hawkins Act, and the return of real rent control to California cities. Costa-Hawkins is the 1995 law that severely limits cities’ rent control options.
