Bay Area News Group article on the Governor's race ignores Delaine Eastin

BAY AREA NEWS GROUP IGNORES DELAINE EASTIN ON EDUCATION

The Bay Area News Group (Santa Cruz Sentinel, San Jose Mercury News, etc.) article in today's news talks about the positions of the gubernatorial candidates on higher education in California. It only speaks about 3 Democrats (Newsom, Chiang, Villaraigosa) and 1 Republican (Cox). They didn't even mention Delaine Eastin. But Delaine Eastin, also running as a Democrat, polled as well as Chiang in the 2 most recent polls by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) within the margin of error, according to the polling information on Ballotopedia. Those 2 polls had the largest sample size of all polls listed there, so they're more credible than the other smaller and older polls.

Does Delaine Eastin know anything about higher education in California? Sure she does. She was elected as the state's Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1995 to 2003. Before that, Eastin was a member of the California State Assembly from 1986 to 1994. She has degrees from 2 UC campuses and was executive director of the National Institute for School Leadership. Does she understand money? She was a corporate planner and accounting manager for Pacific Bell. So she's definitely qualified to know about higher education and the funding of it in California. Yet, the news group completely disregarded her.

Eastin's website gives her position on all levels of education in California, including: "We need to make college at UC, CSU and Community College tuition free again for instate students."

When she went to the University, and when I did, there was no tuition for in-state students, only small registration and other modest fees. In fact, from its founding in 1868 until the 1970's, there was no tuition at UC. http://www.dailycal.org/2014/12/22/history-uc-tuition-since-1868/ This enabled the state to become what it is today, as the California-educated students went into the state's workforce and became the innovators and leaders. Funding higher education for zero tuition wasn't an expense for the state, it was an investment. We need leaders who understand that and will take us back there again.

So, shame on the Bay Area Newsgroup to shun Delaine Eastin for Governor.
