Rent control campaigns presently in ten California cities

Efforts to stabilize communities in California with with much needed rent control measures and just cause eviction protections are presently occurring in ten cities throughout California.

Rent control and just cause eviction protections are the only fair and humane ways to slow down greedy landlords and profiteering realtors from gouging renters with never ending rent increases, unjust evictions, displacing renters from their communities, and adding to the already-dire affordable housing crisis in California.

As of today, tenant activists have ten rent control campaigns happening in California cities including Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Santa Ana, Sacramento, Pomona, Pasadena, National City, Long Beach, Inglewood, and Glendale.

As recent as May 9, 2018, tenant activists in Inglewood filed more than 14,000 signatures with the city clerk, and the coalition of activists needed around 10,000 valid signatures for the initiative to be placed on the ballot.

Earlier today on May 11, 2018, in support of rent control the Movement for Housing Justice in Santa Cruz submitted over 10,000 signatures, being many more signatures than the 5,600 valid signatures needed to get on the November ballot.

And reportedly, tenant activists are currently collecting signatures in Pomona to place a rent control measure on the ballot.

Additionally, the Affordable Housing Act should appear on the California ballot for people to vote for on November 6, 2018, to repeal the draconian Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act.

Oakland has the fastest pace for gentrification in the Bay Area, and repealing the Costa-Hawkins Act would stabilize communities, help to slow down the process of gentrification, evictions, and the exodus of people being forced out of their housing, and the Bay Area.

Rent control is already successfullly protecting renters in the cities of Berkeley, Beverly Hills, Campbell, East Palo Alto, Fremont, Hayward, Los Angeles, Los Gatos, Oakland, Palm Springs, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Monica, Thousand Oaks, and West Hollywood.

For those needing help in the Oakland area to fight against an eviction contact the Eviction Defense Center at 510/452-4541, East Bay Community Law Center 510/548-4040, or Bay Area Legal Aid 1-800-551-5554.

How do the enacted laws in the different cities compare? Is there a template? How do the ballot proposals upcoming compare?

There's much concern in Santa Cruz about the wording of the upcoming ballot measure.

I fail to see how rent control / just cause eviction is going to help the plight of the renters. The data is out there, many many cities have already tried this experiment and it has failed. Why do we have to go down this road again? Rent control leads to less supply and higher prices. Only a few benefit from - the rest are going to be stuck in competition for less available rentals.

Here in Santa Cruz we're already seeing the results - there have been MORE THAN 100 rental properties (single family, multi res, and condo/apt/townhome) put on the market since the emergency freeze went in effect in Feb. Thats a LOT of beds!! Why? Bc those owners were scared of the RISK that comes with the new Rent Control / JCE stuff... do you think the new owners are going to be any less risk adverse?? In all actuality they'll probably just be more SV commuters that move into these properties.

There has to be another way?!

Hey Lynda -
"Rent control and just cause eviction protections are the only fair and humane ways to slow down greedy landlords and profiteering realtors..."
...this isn't always the case, and is a GIANT oversimplification and unfair name calling. property owners and the rest of the associated business are also affected by constantly increasing prices. You call it greed, I call it expenses.
...Property tax? Always on the rise, ever year without fail
Trade Services (plumbing, electrical, gc)? Not getting any cheaper, in fact some of the most expensive in the NATION
Raw Materials (wood, screws, parts)? Same same... every year, more and more expensive
