UNION TIME: Fighting for Workers' Rights (Matthew Barr, 2016, 86min, USA)

One of the greatest union victories of the 21st century was the 15 year fight to organize Smithfield Foods' pork processing plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina. From 1993 to 2008, workers struggled against dangerous working conditions, intimidation, and low pay. They were organized by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, whose "Justice for Smithfield Workers" campaign brought national attention to the plight of the plant workers, and ultimately fair working conditions for 5,000 workers.

Speaker: Dana Frank, Professor of labor history at UCSC

Presented as part of the Reel Work May Day Labor Film Festival in recognition of Workers' Memorial Day.
