Hi Neighbors,
Please sign the petition below against the disastrous and extremely undemocratic bill now going through the California State Senate which would dramatically increase gentrification and evictions for working people, teachers, seniors and the disabled in most cities and towns in the state!
Senator Scott Wiener has written SB 827 and sells it as a bill to force cities and town to build much denser housing along transit corridors to reduce the state's carbon emissions. However, it is in fact a huge gift to his developer backers and will try to solve climate issues on the backs of working people resulting in large increases in housing costs, evictions and displacement.
Those who oppose the bills are tarred as wealthy home-owners who don't want a greater density of housing in their neighborhoods but in fact, the bill is opposed by almost every housing rights group in the state. Many, many cities and towns are lining up against it and so is the Sierra Club - all groups one would expect to support a bill that was good for the climate and housing. In fact, a self-serving, fake "grass roots" group called YIMBY, formed by two tech CEO's, is leading the charge for this bill which would be very unlikely to displace them or their friends and would create housing only they could afford.
Wiener is trying to add amendments to save the bill, and his gift to his developer pals, but it is so basically flawed that no amendments will prevent it from creating massive increases in gentrification and evictions.

On April 3rd there will be a vote by the full Board of Supervisors. We want the Board to send a STRONG MESSAGE to our State legislators that we join Los Angeles and other cities to unequivocally Oppose SB 827 with No Amendments. The bill is fundamentally flawed and amendments won't fix it. Once SF takes an official stand, we will focus our attention on the State legislators and remind them who they represent -- and it's not the developers backing the bill.

ABOUT SENATE BILL 827
Senate Bill 827 (proposed by State Senator Scott Wiener) is statewide, one-size-fits-all approach to add more housing along transit routes. It's a deeply flawed bill and amendments won't fix it, they only create loopholes. San Francisco is already doing more than most cities to provide additional housing both at market and affordable rates, yet the City will be disproportionately impacted with 96% of San Francisco parcels up-zoned to allow big, tall luxury apartment and condo complexes.
If passed, Senate Bill 827 would:
Remove present height controls and allow 5 to 8 story complexes.
Remove density restrictions.
Remove minimum parking requirements.
Take away your voice in neighborhood planning.
If passed, Senate Bill 827 additionally would:
NOT protect renters who will be removed by Ellis Act and payoffs.
NOT provide any additional affordable housing.
NOT provide for needed infrastructure to support new units.
NOT provide for added demand for public safety services.
ABOUT SENATE BILL 828
A companion bill, Senate Bill 828, stands to increase the State's "Regional Housing Needs Allocation," or "RHNA." If passed, SB 828 will define San Francisco as not having enough market rate housing, and thereby would make another bill by Senator Wiener, Senate Bill 35, effective. This legislation forces any city that does not meet its housing production goal to allow developers to build anything, anywhere with no neighborhood notification, no Discretionary Review, and no design guidelines.
These bills will not result in more affordable housing, as the proponents claim. Instead the units will be top of the market luxury apartments and condos and not even make a dent in the housing issue. Also putting tall, dense housing within a 1/4 mile of bus routes does not mean people will ride public transit over their own cars, Uber or Lyft. Also residents will oppose new public transit projects because it triggers the up-zoning of SB 827 in their area. And finally, imagine local transportation agencies such as SFMTA, who are not beholden to the voters, having the power to simply adjust bus routes and schedules that would then change the reach of SB 827.

We strongly support you folks. SB 827 is a developer-driven political play. But, please join our appeal against the Central SoMa Plan. It is sick and selfish to oppose SB 827 while simultaneously supporting the Central SoMa Plan. Please join us in challenging both of these issues.
Everyone:
SB827/Forced densification laws set the stage for the economic and demographic decline of the great state of California--and the dramatic accelerated rise of rival states such as Texas, Washington, Colorado and Arizona.
I can even imagine throngs of various (Texas business interest-financed) promoters/boosters doing canvassing door-to-door in much of impacted affluent California suburbia selling the CALIFORNIA EXIT option in the face of pending legislation like SB827! (In particular Texans will view this event as a "gift from God" and fully exploit the coming backlash!)
Just as Sao Paulo eclipsed Rio De Janeiro as the business capital of Brazil, and Toronto succeeded Montreal as the business capital of Toronto, or the rising US sunbelt sapped wealth, investment and population from the northern rust belt--the Bay Area and California will be replaced as the great economic and innovation engine of America.
Regardless of highly visible "Silicon Valley" support for SB827 and similar state-level efforts and laws to force densification on California single family zones--such laws may begin the GREAT EXODUS of major corporations, private-family business, wealthy and middle class households out of the state. Any economic decline in California will negatively impact support for and progress on green space development and ambitious environmental goals in both California and the nation as a whole!
Very high tax and regulatory burdens so far have not led to such an economic and social decline--but forced densification bills like SB827 will negatively impact venture capitalists, college professors, CEOs, business owners and countless others literally where they choose to live with their families.
Countless times I have been told by people -- both conservative and liberal -- that but for the love of their home, neighborhood and community they/their resources would leave the state due to its "challenges." Now, the prospect of block-busting state laws removes their ability to literally govern their own neighborhoods/communities. (Also, destroys incentives to maintain/improve single family housing stock in communities subject to forced densification.)
State-level central control forced densification laws like SB827 will sever/break this last binding attachment to long term residency in the State among an irreplaceable critical mass wealth and economic resources--first a trickle then mass exodus and economic decline from a "self-inflicted wound" imposed on the people by arrogant state leadership.
Once the negative consequences (or "BLESSINGS" from a Texan perspective as they will enjoy benefits) are realized and set in motion they will be very very hard to reverse.
Perhaps a voter-rebellion led anti-densification initiative(s) could save the state from the damage of these proposed laws! Otherwise with the exodus/decline the debate shifts to which states--including Texas, Washington, Oregon and Colorado--will benefit most from the Great State of California's stumble.
What high tax burdens and regulations failed to wreck and disassemble--overreach in the form of forced densification laws may ultimately set in motion (and the Texas business promoters cheer!). Social and economic decline and failure in California will undermine the national and global standing of the California economic, social and environmental model--we must prevent this!
