WorkWeek Radio reports on the 370 day strike of the USW 5114 Workers at Idaho’s Lucky Friday mine. They are fighting for health and safety rights.
Next WorkWeek looks at the war on injured Kaiser workers. We hear from three injured orthopedic technicians, David Gonzalez, Dina Worthington and Derrik Erickson who worked at the Kaiser Stockton and Modesto hospitals. They had injuries and then were terminated in a frame-up to get rid of senior workers. The lawyers representing the workers discuss the documents that they have discovered that financially incentivized managers to punish and terminate injured workers. Their attorneys Gary Gwilliam and Jayme L. Walker charge that these policies were in fact part of the profiteering by Kaiser bosses and executive management.
WorkWeek then interviews former Kaiser workers Dina Padilla who was a Kaiser SEIU member in Sacramento representing Kaiser workers on the Sacramento Labor Council and Gail Shephard who as a orthopedic technician at the Kaiser Downey hospital which was build on a super fund toxic dump site. She also discusses the refusal of the SEIU union to represent the injured workers and process arbitrations that would forced Kaiser to protect their rights.
Padilla reports about the targeting of over 100 senior and minority workers in the Sacramento area and the dangerous health and safety conditions in the area including mold.
Gail Shephard talks about how discovered that workers were being contaminated because of the highly toxic site that Kaiser built their hospital on and how she and her family and pets were contaminated. She reports her pet and her daugher died from contaminated material that she had brought back from her job.

Nothing has changed since our strike in 1986. Where the topic was Kaiser bringing in a TOP TWO & THREE TIER system where new workers would be getting less per hour and less in lieu benefits plus SEIU claiming to care about patient care.
The top tier, walked the picket line for almost 2 months BUT then SEIU gleefully joining WITH Kaiser's demands, that SEIU then pressured its union membership to accept the lower Two and amp; Three tiered pay and amp; benefit scale.
What we top tier workers/union members were not aware of at the time, was that as the top tier workers/union members with top wages and benefits, that we were the specific targets and with kaiser not hiring enough employees to handle the increased amount of new patients, we were going to be worked to the point of physical and mental abuse and discriminated against, all deliberately, by newly trained RN management, all of it done with a sinister labyrinth plan to force us onto the California workers compensation system and then to the SSA/Medicare funded programs, funded by us as workers, via the federal mandatory FICA programs.
Long term employees died due to over medicating by kaiser doctors, being forced to work in moldy, asbestos, deadly chemicals and toxins and infectious filled medical buildings WITH NO help from any state or federal agencies and certainly with ABSOLUTELY NO HELP from SEIU, that JUST considered us sacrifices to be made for KAISER but all the while collecting union dues from its union members.
This started in 1986 and nothing has changed for its workers or for its patients. SEIU and amp; Kaiser do not care about its workers anymore than either Kaiser cares about it's patients. It's all about collecting money any way possible without regard for human life. After all, kaiser is just another insurance company with risk management expertise, called workers compensation.
The media reports on other healthcare plans of their CEO's salaries, but they all conveniently forget to mention kaiser's CEO Tyson's salary being the highest of them all, all on the broken limbs and amp; lives of both its patients and its workers. FOR 32 years...Nothing has changed BUT FOR the increased and outrageous amounts of CEO SALARIES!
