There's an SF mayoral forum going on this evening at the Women's Building, but you wouldn't know from listening to any of the invited candidates that the high land values of San Francisco are the people's property. Those high land values, mind you, are what make the rents of the Bay Region so formidable . . . and drive down comparative wages . . . and corrupt politics.
Before and during this forum meet the Leon Phat for Mayor campaign. Alone, Leon Phat is relentlessly highlighting (in multiple, rainbow colors) the matter of land values properly belonging to the people. Leon Phat urges all voters to demand the other candidates front-load the question of public property right in land values before moving on to their tepid and insufficient (but well-meaning) efforts to staunch displacement and "save the heart of San Francisco." As Phat frames it, "Start with a great idea--in this case Land Value Taxation--then scale it to the possible."
"Land values = the community." --Leon Phat
