This memorial lecture series honors the memory of the late Mario Savio – spokesperson for Berkeley’s Free Speech Movement – and the spirit of moral courage which he and other activists of his generation exemplified. Since 1997, the Mario Savio Memorial Lecture has brought progressive luminaries like Howard Zinn, Molly Ivins, Cornel West, and Elizabeth Warren to Berkeley for high-profile public presentations. The lecture series promotes the values that Mario Savio struggled to advance throughout his life: human rights, social justice, economic and environmental justice, and freedom of expression. It provides a forum where young people can connect with seasoned activists, serving as a beacon to those whose idealism is our best hope for the future.
