This forum will focus on the current rift within the Democratic Party--between many of its leaders and “mainstream” supporters, on the one hand, and progressive activists on the other.
The Democrats’ rightward drift has placed its leadership in direct conflict with progressives who want to change the system from the grassroots, but who have continued working within the Party so far. How long can that last, given the fact that the Party has offered scant support to progressive candidates while suffering huge electoral setbacks over the past few years?
Are there ways to reconcile this divide? How can the two factions join forces to mount an
effective resistance against Trump’s administration?
SPEAKERS:
BEN BECKER: Co-chair, San Francisco Berniecrats; elected SF Democratic Assembly delegate; former elected national delegate for Bernie Sanders
REID CHALKER: Elections & Endorsements Coordinator, SF Berniecrats; Delegate to 2017 California State Democratic Party Convention
JUDY HESS: California State Coordinator, Progressive Democrats of America; Delegate to California State Democratic Party Convention (San Diego 2007 and Fresno 2011); Regional Coordinator, Campaign for Healthy California
HENE KELLY: Longtime officer of both the San Francisco Labor Council and California Alliance for Retired Americans; Region 6 Director, California Democratic Party
MODERATOR: TOM GALLAGHER, Former Massachusetts State Representative; President, Bernal Heights Democratic Club; Delegate to 2017 California State Democratic Party Convention
