On June 8th, the Board of State and Community Corrections will vote on funding for the Contra Costa jail expansion. Then the proposal will come back to the board of supervisors for a final vote, which could happen as soon as the following Tuesday. The expansion will cost $25 million plus $5 million per year for 10 years. It will provide more beds for ICE rentals (in the old building) and for mass incarceration. Sheriff Livingston met with Jeff Sessions on the day the Board of Supervisors approved the application. We don't want the Trump agenda in Contra Costa County! They are touting this expansion as an effort to increase mental health care in the jail but only two new mental health staffers are in the budget of the proposal. That is a ruse. The community wants a transparent review of how mental health care is delivered in the jail, not a bigger jail. Also, bail reform (SB 10) could reduce the inmate population significantly. Come tell the Board that we dont want the jail expansion. We want that money to be spent on services to keep people out of jail in the first place! Each person gets two minutes to speak. One if it's crowded. If you don't speak, we still need your support! Bring a small sign to hold inside or a larger sign to hold outside if you can.
