GLIDE and Veterans Alley are joining forces to bring community expressive art to the Tenderloin. For five weeks beginning in late April, esteemed neighborhood muralist and Veterans Alley founder Amos Gregory will be hosting a weekly workshop at GLIDE to teach the art of muralism to the local community. All are welcome and Amos will personally mentor anyone interested in making the commitment to take on apprenticeship during the project.
This project is part of the GLIDE Center for Social Justice’s empowerment work, which brings community-focused art and organizing to the Tenderloin through partnerships and innovative initiatives. It is also simultaneously an expansion of the work that has been done by Veterans Alley since 2011, bringing emotional and civic empowerment to disenfranchised communities through expressive art and community building. Working at GLIDE, Veterans Alley will be able to reach a large cross section of the Tenderloin community, both non-veterans and veterans, including those struggling to bring their voices to many issues from displacement, to homelessness, to the everyday beauty and vibrant humanity of an often-misunderstood neighborhood.
The project will focus on the theme of Tenderloin Solidarity and will produce a wall-sized mural that will be showcased at GLIDE, through the brushes of GLIDE’s program participants and neighborhood residents.
WHEN:
4:00 pm, each Wednesday, from April 19 through May 17 (5 weeks total) (workshop continues through the 5:00 pm Speakout session)
WHERE:
GLIDE, Freedom Hall, 330 Ellis Street
About GLIDE:
For more than fifty years, GLIDE has worked to create a radically inclusive, just and loving community mobilized to alleviate suffering and break the cycles of poverty and marginalization. Located in the culturally rich Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, GLIDE serves a diverse cross-section of homeless, low-income and disenfranchised program participants, providing a comprehensive set of programs including: free meals; HIV/Hep C testing and counseling; housing assistance; domestic violence counseling and abatement; substance abuse recovery; licensed childcare; afterschool and summer programs for youth; a resource center for families; free legal services; and access to free primary and behavioral health care. GLIDE has founded and sustained visionary programming, and achieved tangible results for tens of thousands of individuals and families on the margins, all once thought to be beyond the possible. For additional information, visit glide.org.
About Veterans Alley:
Veterans Alley is a community based mural project located in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District. Our project was created and is operated by Veteran Artists. The project consists of murals, covering over an entire block of public facing walls where veterans paint their own stories about the true reality of WAR and the military experience. We supply all sketchbooks, drawing utensils, paints, and wall space.
