The weekly Santa Cruz Word Church (SCWC) poetry open-mic is returning to its original home, the Tannery Arts Center, this Monday, April 10th. What started as a small group of poets performing at the Tannery Arts Center four years ago has quickly evolved into an entire collective of Santa Cruzans and UCSC students that hosts weekly poetry events.
A project of The Legendary Collective, SCWC has been hosting their weekly poetry events at the Food Lounge for more than a year now, after moving from the Tannery Arts Center in early 2015. Now, the SCWC is taking advantage of an opportunity to move back to their original home.
The move back home will be celebrated with an intergenerational poetry slam featuring poet Sparrow Hawk, a member of the UCSC Kinetic Poetics Project (KPP) who will be celebrating the release of his new poetry book “It Still Rains in Imaginary Places.” The KPP is a UCSC organization that partners with SCWC to showcase student poets that compete nationally at poetry slams.
“These weekly poetry events present Santa Cruzans and UCSC students alike an opportunity to come together and share their art in a welcoming and healing space,” says Simone Cardona, organizer with the Legendary Collective who got involved during her time as a UCSC student three years ago.
The event will begin at 4pm with a free poetry-writing workshop. Starting at 5:30pm guests are encouraged to sign-up to perform their poetry, which will begin at 6pm. Featured artist Sparrow Hawk will begin his performance at 7:20pm. The Dead Cow Cafe, which will be officially opening later this month, will be catering the event.
