WorkWeek investigates the suspension of Canadian University Of Lethbridge Global Studies professor Anthony Hall. He is author of "Earth into Property" describing the disastrous effects of capitalism on indigenous peoples The University president without a hearing suspended professor Hall without pay after a national campaign was launched by supporters of Israel accusing him of being anti-semitic and a 9/11 conspiracy supporter.
We interview David Robinson who is the executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers CAUT which represents 68,000 academic and general staff in over 120 universities and colleges throughout Canada about the case. He discusses the attack on tenure and how this and the corporatization of education is threatening academic freedom and educators in North America and around the world.
We then interview Professor Anthony Hall who talks about how Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg were involved in a digital frame-up with his facebook page being used to put up an anti-semitic graphic by an operative which was then used by B'nai Brith supporters to charge that he was anti-semitic. This photo was grabbed by B'nai Brith supporters who launched a coordinated national online petition campaign to demand that he be fired from the University without a hearing.
"Investigation determined the post, while extremely offensive and inappropriate, does not meet the threshold for intent set out in the Criminal Code of Canada for advocating genocide or public incitement of hatred," the police said in a statement on Wednesday. According to the police, the image was posted to Hall's personal Facebook page by a third party.
Zuckerberg had previously met personally with Israeli prime minister Netanyahu and signed a agreement to use Facebook to censure and target critics of Israel.
WorkWeek next looks at the case of the suspension of Berkeley Federation of Teachers BFT Executive Board member Yvette Felarca who was removed from her job after she attended an anti-nazi rally in Sacramento on June 26. She as well was suspended without hearing and banned from her classes. The school board managers and lawyers also illegally interrogated her students without the permission of their parents. The BFT has filed a grievance to return her to the job and there have been rallies to support her return.
