Derek Cressman argues political advertising isn't free speech: it's paid speech and so shouldn't be subject to the same protections. The author will read from and discuss his new book When Money Talks: The High Price of "Free" Speech and the Selling of Democracy.
Since the Supreme Court handed down its Citizens United ruling, US democracy has been further eroded, allowing corporations and the wealthy far more representation of their interests in elections than the average voter. However, seven times before in our history we have approved constitutional amendments to overturn wrongheaded rulings by the Supreme Court—there's no reason we can't do it again. Cressman's book describes what a Constitutional amendment to limit money in politics should say.
“When money talks, democracy walks. Read this book to learn how We the People can take back our elections from the billionaires and overturn a Supreme Court ruling that is a gross misreading of our Constitution.” -- Robert B. Reich, Chancellor's Professor, Cal Berkeley, and former US Secretary of Labor
