Last year, our library director was forced to resign after 39,000 books
were tossed. He had insisted that only 2,000 books had been weeded, and also
put a policy in place that took 34 librarians off their jobs of selecting and weeding
the collection. Instead, two managers would essentially handle the book budget
and all the decisions about the collection. That library director is gone, but his policies are still in place. And now, library workers who spoke up about the destruction of the collection are being harassed and threatened with being fired. Join the Whistleblowers Defense Fun(d)raiser and Reception on September 11th to support the brave whistleblowers, library staff and the public who need access to information through the library. There will be jazz and classical music, a no-host pie bar, and a chance to learn about upcoming actions on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the City Council meeting (public comment, gathering at 6:30) and significantly on Wednesday, Sept. 14th for the Board of Library Trustees meeting (rally at Central Library steps at Noon; rally and public comment at the BOLT meeting at Tarea Hall Pittman / South Branch 6:00 pm).
