Freedom Now Demonstrators Lock Down at Oakland Police Headquarters
A call went out for Freedom Now protests on July 21 targeting the support infrastructure for police oppression, especially police "unions" for their constant and unequivocal defense of cops accused of brutality. Lockdowns and demonstrations kicked off across the country a day early, on July 20, and the Oakland Police Officers' Association was shut down with U-locks, chains, and the bodies of committed activists. On July 21, another group used their own bodies and chains to lock down two doors at Oakland police headquarters.
These doors were locked down at 9am. No arrests were made. Uncertain when the protest ended, but it was likely in the afternoon when marchers gathered at OPD headquarters to meet a large contingent of youth marchers who had gathered at Oscar Grant plaza in front of Oakland City Hall.
