Gov. Brown proposes legislation that would void Prop. C and Prop. K, passed by voters to increase affordable housing construction. And he's holding the state budget hostage to it. This is the first time the state or the governor have tried to take away county zoning and housing controls!
Brown proposes that if proposed housing meets minimal standards of 5-10% affordable housing, etc., the city HAS to approve it -- no public hearing, no changes allowed, and no appeal to local officials. This density bonus would hit San Francisco neighborhoods hard, causing massive displacements of neighbors and local businesses.
While many cities and counties under-produce affordable housing, San Francisco has been a leader in building affordable housing as well as expensive housing.
