Beyond Climate Change: Visions for a Just and Sustainable Future
By now, it's beyond debate that human-caused climate change is already happening and that nothing short of radical steps will stop it from reaching crisis proportions. For many of us, it's also clear that the world's governments and international institutions are not willing to go nearly far enough in taking steps to address climate change.
So what do we do? Climate justice activists are proposing a wide range of short-term strategies for forcing governments to take action and for building a mass movement that has the clout to do this or, beyond reforms, to actually replace those governments with a radically different system.
But what is often missing is a discussion of what sort of system we are working towards. Whether the climate justice movement "wins" in the short term or not, we need to be thinking about the long term as well.
Radical System Change Santa Cruz invites you to a conversation about visions for a just and sustainable future, in Santa Cruz and beyond. Come with your own ideas. Be bold: no one will be faulted for proposing something that's too radical or utopian!
If you have time to prepare, you may want to read this paper from the Next Systems Project, which presents some, though by no means all, of the current thinking about the future.
