Mayor Libby Schaaf has known about the Oakland Police Department's culture of predatory misconduct for years. She's been in city government here far longer than her mayoral term, so it's ridiculous that she's acting surprised right now.
Libby has a history of attempting to repress free speech and silence critics (e.g. when she tried to put an 8pm curfew on public demonstrations). We're not surprised that she's now spending taxpayer money to conduct what is likely an illegal investigation to intimidate department whistleblowers who expose police misconduct.
Oakland needs a mayor who doesn't just feign outrage when she's in front of the cameras.
