N. CA Carpenters UBC Oppose Sale Of Adams Middle School To Ron Beller/Caliber Charter

by Labor Video Project
The Northern California District Council of Carpenters has opposed the non-union charter school operator and hedge fund speculator Ron Beller's purchase of the 6 acre Richmond WCCCSD Adams Middle School for $60,000. Beller who helped blow up the world economy with the Peloton Fund in 2008 now is speculating on privatizing the public school system. He wanted the UBC to make a contribution to his non-union Caliber charter school.

Timothy Lipscomb, the senior representative of Northern California District Council Of Carpenters UBC and with Local 152 spoke on June 12, 2016 at a labor community press conference and called for the rejection of the sale of the WCCSD Adams Middle Schoo which has 6 acres l for $60,000 to Ron Beller, the owner of the Caliber Charter School chain. Beller told the UBC that he could not afford union wages for the building and wanted them to make a contribution to the non-union Caliber charter school chain. Beller is a former Goldman Sachs subprime speculator who set up his own hedge fund Peloton which went bankrupt in 2008 and lost $17 billion. UTR teachers and other community members spoke about the need to oppose this charter and have union workers building public schools and working in them. The Aspire charter chain which recently built a new school in the neighborhood had promised the community that it would be built with union labor. Instead they used the anti-labor developer Chamberlin and non-union Big D Pacific Builders-Education Division. Big D brought in construction workers from Nevada who were paid $15.00 an hour. Chamberlin has also contributed tens of thousands of dollars to pro-charter WCCSD members such as Val Cuevas. Cuevas received $59,000 through their pro-charter front Education Matters and $2500 directly to Cuevas. Chamberlin builds the charter schools non-union and then leases them to the charter operator with the school district having to pay rent to Chamberlin.

§Beller Tells Richmond parents and community he Is "Working For Free"
by Labor Video Project
Beller told the Richmond parents community and labor members that he is "working for free" to help give children "choice" in his Caliber charter school. The California Charter School Association CCSA which he and his wife Jennifer Moses have given tens of thousands of dollars to has fought unionization of teachers and is working to building non-union publicly funded charter schools throughout California using proposition 39 which was funded by pro-charter billionaire Netflix owner Reed Hasting and the Walmart Walton family who gave millions to pass it.

Let's be a little more objective about this issue. Mr. Beller is trying to provide a decent public school to impoverished children who's only other options are the failing schools provided by the school district in Richmond. Doing this costs money and Mr. Beller is raising the money from private sources to pay for it.

Now, it's understandable that the unions would like a piece of the action - the construction funding (all donated by private contributors) and the education program funding for teacher salaries. But every dollar the unions seek to take is a dollar taken directly from the education of poor children.

Should the unions be able to take a piece of this action from poor kids? Maybe. But let's just be honest about what's at stake here - who stands to lose and who stands to gain.
