Beach Flats Garden Rally to City Council

800_save-this-garden.jpg
Date:
Tuesday, April 26, 2016
Time:
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Event Type:
Protest
Organizer/Author:
Beach Flats Community Garden
Location Details:
312 Raymond St.
Santa Cruz

It is time to turn up the heat--- the city broke their agreements about protecting the garden, both in terms of space promised and a bunch of trees and cactus that were demolished during Spring Break.

Beach Flats Community is at last in the city council's agenda!!
We can definitely use this opportunity to finally make our voices heard! This can be our break through and have the City Council finally acquire 100% of the beach flats garden.

We started with a garden on the verge of full closure, we brought hundreds to the city council. Now we are looking at keeping almost half of the garden for 3 years. More pressure can bring a permanent solution.
Please join us in this ongoing movement which will not stop until we see actions from the city council!

With numbers comes power, with students come change!!!

§Save Beach Flats Garden: MARCH to City Hall
by Beach Flats Community Garden
800_beach-flats-garden-march-to-city-hall.jpg
Join gardeners, students, and community members at 5:30pm this Tuesday, to march from the Beach Flats Garden to City Hall. We need your support!!

The Beach Flats Garden is on the City Council's 7:00pm meeting agenda. If you can't participate in the march, you can still meet us over at City Hall.

DETAILS:
City staff will be presenting their six-month progress report regarding commitments made by City Council on October 27, 2015: 1) to negotiate with Seaside Company to acquire the Garden property, 2) to consider a variety of funding sources for purchasing the land, and 3) to finalize an interim lease agreement with Seaside.

We will be asking that the city fulfill its promises to the Beach Flats gardeners in good faith. Not only has an interim lease not been signed, it appears there has been no real attempts to allocate funds for purchase, pursue substantiative negotiations with Seaside, or to even assess the value of the garden property.

Additionally, on March 24th, City employees entered the garden without warning, using heavy machinery to clear the portion of the garden that Seaside seeks to reclaim— destroying mature fruit trees and long-tended perennials, in violation of agreements made with gardeners. The City describes this action as an "inadvertent error."

We will be calling on the City to provide appropriate compensation for the loss of the trees and perennials, and to take sincere actions demonstrating accountability for this significant violation of trust. In addition, we're calling for the fulfillment of the city's promises to the gardeners of a new shed, benches, water spigots, and a restroom.

Please join us on Tuesday to communicate a strong message to City Council about how much our communities value the Beach Flats Garden and all that it represents!

* No More Broken Promises! * Purchase the Whole Garden! * Viva El Jardin! *

"In order save your hamlet, we are going to have to destroy your hamlet."

This is yet another case where the solution is worse than the problem... The Santa Cruz City government has lost it's way. Again.
