San Francisco Police Execute Homeless Man
Despite SFPD Deescalation Claim, Jose Luis Gongora Shot Down in Under 30 Seconds
On Thursday, April 7, on Shotwell Street in the Mission District of San Francisco, a homeless man, Jose Luis Gongora, allegedly brandishing a knife, was executed by SFPD. There is no known video of the killing itself. There isn't even a picture of Jose Luis. What has been made available is surveillance camera video of police cars rolling up, police getting out and approaching Jose Luis off-camera. Police claimed, at least initially, that they attempted to deescalate the situation, but the video shows two cops approaching Jose Luis, one with a shotgun pointed at him, and one or both of them shouting at him. The one with the shotgun can be heard firing four "less lethal" bean-bag rounds at Jose Luis, police claim to no effect. At least one of the cops then shoots and mortally wounds Jose Luis, who died shortly thereafter. The time between the first cop stepping out of the car and Jose Luis being gunned down is less than thirty seconds.
On April 9, SFPD raided a nearby tent encampment on Shotwell Street. Witnesses told The Anti Police-Terror Project that police knocked over objects with sticks, including several memorial candles that lined the front of Jose Luis' tent which is still at the scene.
