Oakland: March 26 "Renters Upgrade" Campaign and signature gathering event
We are inviting anyone who is interested in getting trained on how to collect signatures out to the ACCE office this Saturday. We'll have an overview of the initiative, share details of the signature gathering plan, and review opportunities for both organizations and individuals to get involved and discuss the plan for the Campaign Launch. Please come and help make this first meeting a success!
The Time is NOW ...
The time is "NOW" to support the tenant's movement in Oakland in the effort to bring the "Renters Upgrade" ballot initiative to the voters!
Oakland Renters, Homeowners, City Workers and Clergy Push For More Renter Protections
by Lynda Carson -- Thursday March 3rd, 2016
Oakland’s “Renters Upgrade” initiative was filed on March 3 at Oakland City Hall, and the Oakland renter’s movement is part of the growing renter’s movement seeking stronger renter protections in other cities of Northern California, including the City of Richmond http://tinyurl.com/j9xpphe , and Alameda http://tinyurl.com/z7thhwl , where renter protection initiatives were also filed recently.
If approved by voters, Oakland’s “Renters Upgrade” would expand Oakland’s current “Just Cause for Eviction” law and provide greater ability for the city to enforce existing laws amidst a wave of unfair evictions and widespread harassment as the demand for housing in Oakland grows.

Last year the members and leaders of over 15 labor, community, housing and faith groups came together and identified the need to directly address the growing issue of displacement by increasing protections for renters in Oakland. Just months later, we are proud to officially launch the “Protect Oakland Renters Act” & campaign to qualify this measure on the November, 2016 City-wide Ballot. Here’s the rub, we have to collect 33,000 signatures by June 1. We know we can do it. Are you in?
Here are some critical updates and exciting next steps!

When: Saturday, April 2nd
Where: CJJC office @ 3268 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland 94608
Folks will register at 9:30, then there’s a brief program and training on why the time is NOW to protect renters and take on Oakland’s growing displacement crisis. We’ll have a how-to “signature gathering 101” and then head out to neighborhoods and high traffic areas to speak directly with Oakland voters and collect signatures to qualify this measure on the November Ballot.
We're calling on all allies of renters, working families and communities of color being pushed out of the city to turn out in large numbers to show both the breadth and strength of the coalition, as well as to ensure that we have a solid crew of folks to kick off our volunteer signature gathering program!
