City of Santa Cruz debates criminalization of sleeping
A closer look at 3 hour debate triggered by Don Lane's modest proposal will reveal the underlying issues of housing and the lack of it in Santa Cruz and elsewhere. Unfortunately, the audio and video records of the March 8 city council session pose difficulties: so we here we present the audio and video records of the event in a way that can easily be accessed and shared.
Of 1913 camping citations issued in Santa Cruz
last year, 1555, or 81% were issued for sleeping.
CRUZNEWS (15mar16) At the 7pm session of the March 8 Santa Cruz City Council meeting, Don Lane presented his proposal to eliminate the crime of sleeping by removing references to it from the current camping ordinance. The presentation includes consultation with city staff, and is followed by citizens comments, then a final discussion by the council culminating in a vote. The whole process was 3 hours and 9 minutes. This segment is 50 minutes.
