Richard Perkins 1000th Person Killed by American Police in 2015
Richard Perkins Killed by Oakland Police Same Day Patrol Car Smashed Near Major Sideshow
Before dawn on November 15th, about 700 cars showed up to an “LA to the Bay” sideshow in East Oakland. An OPD patrol car was smashed as those gathered chanted, "Fuck the Police!" Later that same day, responding to another sideshow just after dark at about 5:30pm, Oakland police were in the process of impounding several motorcycles when they killed Richard Perkins near 90th and Bancroft Avenues in East Oakland.
Thirty-nine year-old Richard Perkins, father of two, was the 1,000th person killed by police in the United States this year. Officers concede that Perkins was not part of the sideshows but per usual, OPD sought to dehumanize the victim by only talking about a former charge he had while showing the media pictures of the pellet gun they allege he pointed at them out of the blue. Witnesses claim Richard never touched the pellet gun or pointed it at the officers. The officers who shot Richard all wore body cameras, however, police say they didn't have them turned on. The entire scene was captured and recorded by the gas station's video surveillance cameras that are a mere 15-20 feet away from where Richard was gunned down. Officers took that footage but have yet to disclose its contents.
Several vigils and protests have occurred since. On November 17, about 100 students at Castlemont High school walked out in protest of the killing. They marched over to the spot where 39-year-old Perkins was shot before returning to class. On November 20th, 2015, several dozen marched from the Fruitvale BART station to downtown to protest the killing of Richard Perkins by Oakland Police.
