The Full Picture network will hold a training on working in schools for truth-in-recruitment, which is open to all those interested in working in schools for alternatives to military service and a full picture of the military. You're invited for a brown bag lunch at 1 pm, followed by the program at 1:30. The program will include: Introductions; Approaching school staff; presentations by Hart Viges and youth of BAY Peace; dialogue between youth, veterans, school staff, older activists; new research findings on military recruitment in the Bay Area; and planning for Full Picture outreach and presentations. We have a special guest for this training: Hart Viges is a U.S. Army combat veteran turned conscientious objector who works to empower youth to struggle against militarism, racism, poverty, sexism, and ecocide. Hart is a core activist of Sustainable Options for Youth (SOY) in Austin, Texas, which does direct outreach in the public high schools in Austin, Texas as an alternative to military recruitment in the schools. He presents workshops on a comprehensive way to approach counter-recruitment. He has spoken before the French, German, and European Union parliaments. Closer to home, he has spoken all around Texas, as well as taking calls on the GI Rights Hotline. The Full Picture Coalition allies with school communities in the San Francisco Bay Area to balance the information and impact of military recruitment campaigns, by supporting and empowering all of our youth and their families to make informed decisions about the variety of options available for creating bright and self-determined futures.
