Mapping for Social Justice (M4SJ) invites you to our community health-themed social justice Mapathon.

The Mapathon is a chance bring together folks working on social justice issues and mappers who utlilize GIS/mapping in their everyday work. The two-day mapathon is a forum for:

Sharing skills

Developing relationships

Making maps!

We hope that the event will foster longer term relationships between GIS workers and developers interested in social justice campaigns and those working on the frontlines of our communities.

Our general schedule is the following:

Day 1 (Saturday, November 14): 10:30am-6:00pm

Considerations about communication strategy, design and audience
What messages and stories can we communicate with maps and how?
How can we locate/create and work with the data that we will need for our map?

Day 2 (Sunday, November 15): 12:00-5:00pm

Technical skills and implementation
What tools exist and how can we use them to make effective maps for social justice campaigns?
Trainings on a variety of topics such as Working with Geo Data 101 and Storytelling with Maps will be provided throughout the two-day event.

Meals will be provided. Please contact the organizers if you: have access needs or restricted detary requirements; will need childcare to attend the Mapathon.

While we're calling it a mapathon, we're explicitly welcoming everyone, regardless of their skill or experience with maps. At our mapathon, we are collaborating as technologists, community organizers and concerned individuals to contribute to important work in our communities.

The event is free to all. We ask that you plan to attend both days. If you are unable to attend both days, please contact us about the possibility of attending one of the two days (mapping4socialjustice [at] gmail.com)

More information and a complete agenda will be posted here closer to the Mapathon.
