The Peace and Unity March occrus around Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos, on Saturday, November 7th in the Watsonville City Plaza. We provide altar space (a Day of the Dead tradition of honoring and remembering the dead), for the mothers of victims and the rest of the community at 9am. At noon, the community begins to march through the neighborhoods effected by violence.
Peace and Unity March was established in 1994 by Watsonville youth, in response to the ongoing violence in the community, when two young people ages 16 and 9 were gunned down in Pajaro. Since its inception, the march has grown to encompass community-based grass roots organizing by youth, parents, teachers, local businesses, unions, religious, spiritual and arts groups.
The vision for this year's march is to be broad and inclusive of the entire community, with mothers and families of victims of violence leading the march. And to provide a constructive model of community coming together in unity to inspire dialogue and mutual understanding to support peace in our neighborhoods.
We hope to see you there!
