From East Oakland With Love
Book release + art exhibition
Art by Chamuco Cortez
Poetry by East Oakland natives
Saturday October 24th 6-10pm
Spoken word, music, food + aquas frescas
The linocuts of East Oakland artist Chamuco Cortez come to us inspired by a legacy of Mexican popular art. From the pre-revolutionary days of José Guadalupe Posada, through the generations of the Taller de Gráfica Popular, Mexico and its diaspora have a deep history of using art to translate community struggles and celebrations. Chamuco gives us a unique opportunity to witness the reinvigoration of our ancestral arts, blending past and present and using the same techniques Posada and the artists of the Taller used. Their goal was to bring art to the people, to communicate information for resistance, and to convey pride in la lucha. Chamuco masterfully does the same here with From East Oakland with Love, pairing select works with poetry by Oakland writers.
Please join us on Saturday October 24th from 6pm to 10pm for spoken word, music, food and aquas frescas. The 40 page book will be available for sale as well as original linoblock prints. Published by Oakland's Pochino Press. Check them out at http://www.pochinopress.com
