Please join us for this FREE/donation event and unique opportunity to meet and hear Free from Harm’s founder and director, Robert Grillo’s presentation, Fictions, Facts and Food Choices, a 45-minute presentation about how popular culture uses a set of fictions to manipulate our beliefs about animals as well as the food choices that stem from those beliefs. This version of his visually compelling presentation speaks specifically to an animal advocacy audience, explaining how a deepened awareness of these fictions can empower our advocacy, and will be followed by a lively open discussion. It is also the subject of his upcoming book.
We are what we eat, but what are the powerful forces shaping our food choices? Billboards, Facebook ads, buses wrapped in signage, TV commercials, Netflix movies, web news posts, cooking shows, food courts, Pandora radio, Whole Foods “feel-good” product displays, “farm-to-fork” restaurant brands. In any given day, we face a deluge of fictions fabricated by the multi-billion dollar food marketing industry which seeks to influence our purchasing decisions. This visually engrossing presentation reveals how the powerful forces of popular culture inform our food choices, often without our even knowing it. In this fictional world, animals are willing participants in whatever role we assign them. Grillo presents 23 of the most common food fictions by showing us concrete and recognizable examples of each. Only when our food choices are informed by facts instead of fictions are we led to solutions to the most pressing ethical, environmental and health issues of our time. Robert Grillo is currently the Founder of Free From Harm, an animal sanctuary in Chicago, Ill. Here pictured with “Sweetpea”
