Oakland police killed yet another Black man today
The killing this morning is the sixth officer-involved shooting by Oakland police in 2015, and the fourth resulting in death. This does not count Richard Linyard, who police claim suffocated to death after he squeezed himself between two buildings during a police chase. All of OPD's victims this year have been of African descent, of course. The name of today's victim is not yet publicly known, although it's been reported that he was homeless and an immigrant, possibly from West Africa. Police were called after the man was found sleeping in or around the parking garage of a Lake Merritt-area apartment building near the intersection of MacArthur & Van Buren, next to I-580 and just above Grand Avenue. OPD responded by racing up to the man and shooting him down in the street. Witnesses report that police let the man bleed out without rendering medical aid, while a police officer with non-life-threatening injuries was rushed to the hospital. This evening, protesters gathered at the scene, speaking out against the continuing slaughter of Black men and women by police and cops' refusal to utilize proven de-escalation techniques rather than hurtling headlong toward the use of deadly force. Protesters marched through the streets as night fell.

Update - Officer Involved Shooting, 200 block of MacArthur Boulevard
On Thursday, August 27, 2015 just before 7:00 AM, Oakland Police officers who were working on graveyard shift were dispatched to the 200 block of MacArthur Boulevard on a report of an assault. The victim reported being assaulted when confronting a trespasser in the garage area of a residential complex. The officers searched the area and were unable to locate the suspect.
Due to shift change, the officers were relieved by a dayshift officer, who arrived just after 7:00 AM to continue the investigation by taking a report from the victim. At the conclusion of the officer’s preliminary investigation, she began to drive away when an individual matching the description of the suspect stepped from the sidewalk onto the roadway in front of her vehicle.
The officer got out of the vehicle and was immediately assaulted by the suspect, who began hitting her in the head and face with a chain. The suspect continued to advance toward the officer, swinging the chain. The officer discharged her firearm, striking the suspect. Medical personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the suspect deceased. The officer was transported to a local hospital, where she is being treated for trauma to the head and face. She is currently listed in stable condition.
At this time, the Oakland Police Department will not be releasing the identity of the suspect until the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau makes an official identification and is able to notify the next of kin.
The officer is an 18-year veteran of the Oakland Police Department.
Information is still preliminary at this time as multiple investigations continue. No further information is available at this time.
Consistent with Departmental policy, this officer involved shooting will be investigated by the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section and the Internal Affairs Division. An independent and concurrent investigation is also being conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
The Oakland Police Department is committed to transparency, but also to a full and complete investigative process that requires information be limited in order to maintain the integrity of the investigation. For this reason, only those preliminary details that do not compromise the investigation will be released. Additional information will be released as soon as practical.
