Parade down the Embarcadero to say NO to Monsanto
The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer announced just two months ago that glyphosate, a key ingredient in Monsanto's pesticide RoundUp, is probably carcinogenic to humans. The time was ripe to demand a ban on the herbicide with protests internationally on March 23.
More than 500 people, many dressed like honey bees and butterflies, made their way down the Embarcadero in San Francisco as part of an international day of protest against the giant agricultural company Monsanto.
Protesters demanded the labeling of genetically modified foods and a world wide ban on Monsanto’s Roundup pesticide because it contains a carcinogen called glyphosate.
The event coincided with similar demonstrations in 40 countries and more than 400 cities on March 23. The local chapter of Veterans for Peace was prominent in the peaceful parade. Raging Grannies sang and drummers drummed at a rally held at Pier 39.
