Interfaith Challenge to Protest Curfew

800_challenge-the-curfew.jpg
Date:
Sunday, May 24, 2015
Time:
8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Event Type:
Protest
Organizer/Author:
Location Details:
14th and Broadway Street
Oakland, California 94612

People of faith and goodwill, come out Sunday night in solidarity with #blacklivesmatter #sayhername #justiceforrekia and all those fighting for black and brown liberation in the streets of Oakland. Together we will sing, pray, meditate, and drum for justice while claiming the streets of Oakland for the people of Oakland.

Last night, the Oakland Police Department, acting on orders from Mayor Libby Schaaf, used chemical agents and flash bang grenades on protestors and then violently arrested a group that was seated, holding candles and singing in solidarity with #blacklivesmatter and #sayhername movements. The mayor has declared street protests illegal after sunset. We will resist this move with nonviolent direct action and militant love, defying the Mayor's attempts to divide our movements into day and night, tolerated and repressed.

Bring candles and drums.

§More Info and Group Agreements
by via Katie
Hi friends, looking forward to being in the streets together tonight. A little more info and group agreements.

1. We will recognize and honor Black leadership in whatever goes down in Oakland tonight, and we will specifically follow the lead of the The BlackOut Collective, ‪#‎BlackLivesMatter‬ Bay Area, Anti Police-Terror Project, The Alan Blueford Center For Justice, and Onyx Organizing Committee in the militant tone of love for black women that they have been setting through ‪#‎SayHerName‬ demonstrations the last few days and nights. Any input from these groups on tonight's event will receive special consideration.

2. Tonight's gathering is based on defying the new curfew and strengthening our collective muscles of resilience against the police repression coming at black liberation movements. Using the motto of "block stuff, don't break stuff," we will NOT be engaging in property damage at this particular space. At the same time, in the bigger picture many of us respect a diversity of tactics — this is part of the reason for coming out in defense of nighttime political activity in the street.

3. We will honor and prioritize the voices and leadership of women, trans people, and queer people in this space.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Katie

I agree that the groups listed below have a lot to say and in any ongoing coalition they no doubt would have a lot of authority and any proposals they might present would probably be passed by democratic vote .
BUT i disagree with the apparent edict that we should follow their leadership no matter what .. One of the contributions of Occupy Oakland was challenging the often undemocratic structure of Left organizations and coalitions over the decades.
I remember well when a former Black Panther woman who once stated at a GA that her experience in the BPP was that dissent was often stifled by the leadership . One of the negative byproducts of that Top Down dynamic was that mistakes were never addresses and corrected . She greatly appreciated the far different process in OO. (Though she would have preferred a Majority vote as opposed to consensus )
My two cents on that. As for the other points they're a No Brainer ! To defy the cops in any other ways tonight other than asserting our right to Take the streets to demand justice any time day or night would be VERY counterproductive .
