Citizen Porta Potty Clean Team: ACTIVATED!
Be careful what you complain about because, you may become responsible for it.
I complain that there are no public restrooms downtown after 10pm (for people who can't access businesses). There is ONLY ONE 24Hour bathroom in downtown and it only gets cleaned 3 times per week. City Councilperson Micah Posner challenged me to step up and clean it myself and he would too.

We need to clean it on the 4 days that there isn't service (service company maxes out at 3 days). Steve Pleich, and Rabbi Phil Posner also have volunteered to pick a day to clean.
Rich and Mary Ann and Matthew Nathanson donated money for supplies. Jozseph Schultz of India Joze and Wheel Works have both sponsored the project with access to hot water and a storage closet (respectively).
Downtown Santa Cruz Bathroom Task Force was created out of a clear need for more to be done in this regard.
Everyone deserves the basic human dignity of having a clean and safe place to go to the bathroom and the city is responsible for providing that to the community at large.
There are several public restrooms downtown for use by people who aren't "buying something," but these close in the evening. This shuts out many people who don't have other access to toilets, leaving them to urinate and/or defecate in areas that aren't suitable.
The city has installed one 24hour porta potty that is cleaned only 3 times a week and is facing a very busy intersection. This isn't nearly enough and, rather than being a solution, may actually create more of a problem in that area because it is perpetually dirty and unusable.
The city pays 2 businesses to open their bathrooms to the public as part of the downtown public restroom program, and we applaud them for this. 2 business are just not enough. Bookshop Santa Cruz has been a downtown champion in this regard; the other business is Cafe Gratitude, which will be closed for repairs for the next several weeks.
All-in-all, everyone seems to agree that more must be done in this regard.
