May is a month to honor, to reflect, and to take action! We honor workers on May Day and we honor mothers on Mothers' Day. Let us not forget that many mothers are also workers, and both women and workers alike have been and continue to be powerful forces in the struggle for justice. Both holidays have their roots in the struggle for justice, and this legacy continues today. One of the earliest mothers' days was organized around improved sanitation in 1872, and while the issues may have changed with time, the current struggles for a livable wage, affordable housing, and healthcare maintain the same dedication to rights and justice. Similarly, while the focus of May Day actions has varied throughout the years, a continuous dedication to social and economic justice has remained. This year, organizers are focusing particular attention on police terrorism and police violence in communities of color.
On Saturday, May 9th, at 4pm at 2969 Mission Street, we will be hosting a forum to honor the critical role that women have played and continue to play in the struggle. WORD will honor Lara Kiswani, Maile Hampton and Nathalie Hrizi—as well as all mothers and women attendee. Join us!
