Friends of Station 40 Press Conference
Friends of Station 40 will be supporting tenants of Station 40, the eleven-year-old collective household and political events space located at 3030B 16th Street, in their fight against eviction.
Last week the collective received eviction court papers (an unlawful detainer) from landlords Ahuva, Emmanuel, and Barak Jolish.
Although the Jolish family had previously stated its intentions to sell, they have refused a proposal presented by the Station 40 collective, SF Community Land Trust, and Mission Economic Development Agency to sell their property to the land trust, in what would be a win-win situation for the property owners, current tenants, and Mission community at large.
Friends of Station 40 say it is no coincidence that the collective is being evicted on the same intersection as the hotly contested proposed development by Maximus Real Estate Partners of a 350-unit luxury apartment building in what is a predominantly working-class neighborhood.

Station 40 is located on 16th Street near Mission, at the virtual ground zero of the tech-boom-fueled galloping ruin of San Francisco's once predominantly working class Mission District. People involved with Station 40 boast that they have held "hundreds" of meetings and social events at their space. Over a two year period from around 2010-2011 into 2012 I tried to get the "crew" at this self-styled "anti-capitalist" subcultural identity space to either let me organize or themselves organize a meeting about the then-accelerating gentrification of SF's Mission District.
And by a meeting, I meant a meeting open to working and low-income people in the neighborhood at large, and not just the usual sheepish scenesters and posturing consumers of subjectively insurrectionary dogmas. No such meeting ever took place. Station 40 person Cindy Milstein told me to my face that the Station 40 "crew" were not interested in hosting or organizing a meeting about the gentrification of San Francisco's Mission District.
Now it appears that Station 40 is falling victim to the larger social forces that they were too terminally self-absorbed or a-political to oppose at a much earlier phase of the problem. What more is there to say? -- as ye sow, so shall ye reap.
Let;s not pretend that the loss of Station 40 is some kind of loss for the overall working class character of San Francisco's Mission District. Working people and renters in the Mission owe the scenesters at Station 40 the same level of interest and engagement in their current plight that Station 40 has shown the Mission District. This "anti-capitalist" social center has had a long-term passively parasitic relationship to the Mission. The loss of Station 40 is no loss for working people and renters in the Mission District.

Is their anything more reliable and comforting then an internet denunciation from Mr Kevin Keating himself? Nothing is quite like watching him project his own failures and shortcomings on to those who were smart enough to avoid and ignore him. He may have moved to Portland to spread his sad bitterness up north, yet his familiar words are always a warm reminder of what happens when one cannot learn from their mistakes as one ages. Love u Keating <3 <3 <3
So, lets see: there's an anarchist meeting space in the Mission, and they're getting kicked out, and this makes them great martyrs to the sacred anti-gentrification cause, except they never ever bothered to hold any anti-gentrification meetings -- and this is all Mister K. Keating's fault? maybe 'Friend' -- friend of the landlord? -- should take a deep breath and explain what they are trying to say here, cause so far it doesn't make a bit of sense.
Apologies for the snarky comment above being unintelligible to those not familiar with the situation. Station 40 has been very active in the struggle against the gentrification of the neighborhood for a long time. Check out the video from yesterday (link below) and you will see such a wide range of community groups and neighborhood organizers participating in the press conference to show their full solidarity with Station 40 in this struggle against their eviction and against the redeveoplment of that intersection. That kind of support doesn't just magically materialize for a press conference. it is the result of years of organizing in the neighborhood and building bridges with others who are struggling to better fight together.
This process has not always been smooth and easy, but it was obvious to anyone who was at 16th and Mission yesterday that Station 40's campaign is being welcomed by many in the neighborhood as another front in this struggle. So the issue here is definitely not whether Station 40 held an "anti gentrification meeting" or not. There have been many, many anti-gentrification meetings at Station 40. The issue is that Kevin Keating was not invited to any of them. There are a lot of people across the Bay area and probably the world who have many good reasons for excluding this guy from everything. I don't care to publicly list them here.
Regardless, don't let Kevin trick you into thinking his comments have anything really to do with gentrification. As always, Kevin is only really talking about Kevin.
